The Nutritionist who never

talks about food

Hi there

While my official title is Registered Holistic Nutritionist, my students and clients like to joke that I’m “the Nutritionist who never talks about food.”

That’s because I don’t talk about protein grams, carbs or portion sizes.

I don’t create meal plans or post recipes on Pinterest.

In my experience, the women I work with already know what they should be eating and not eating (for the most part), what they struggle with is doing it consistently. And that’s where I come in.

I teach my students how to go deeper under the surface and literally reprogram and rewire the old “operating system”that’s driving the old habits and patterns that are preventing them from moving forward.

Approaches like dieting, deprivation and guilt all work againstthe way our brains are naturally wired, which is why they almost always eventually fail. Instead, I show people how they can start working withtheir brain’s natural wiring setting themselves up for long-term success that no longer feels like a daily fight!

It’s not about

the food

What I’ve learned is that it’s not about the food (not really).

It’s not about finding the perfect diet, program or workout.

It’s not about eliminating carbs, sugar, or anything else (who wants to live in a world where you can’t have cake?).

Of course, nourishing your body properly is incredibly important, but the reason you’re not making good choices consistently isn’t because you don’t know what you should be doing.

It’s not about the food.

It’s about your feelings, your patterns and your triggers. It’s about the way your brain works when you’re in a panic and the fact that you’re trying to use food to make the feelings you don’t like go away.

It’s about constructing a new relationship with food where you feel safe enough to feel the feelings, and where you love yourself enough to make yourself and your health a real priority in your life every day.

It’s about becoming that best version of you and letting go of your need to use food as a security blanket or a therapist.

What it’s really about

is you...

I’m also a recovering emotional eater, carb addict and night-time

binge eater

The reason I know how you feel and why you’re stuck so well is because I used to be exactly where you are.

Travel back with me to 2006…

I was a busy working mom with two kids under the age of 5 and a husband who had recently quit his job to pursue his dream of becoming a lawyer.

I’d always been interested in health, but when I found myself having to give 100% at work, 100% at home, and also support my husband, taking care of myself went out the window. I was just trying to get through the day and keep all the balls in the air!

My weight crept up. I started to struggle with blood sugar issues and even depression. I was miserable. It felt like I was drowning.

I wanted to lose weight. I wanted to feel better.
So, just like you,

I tried everything.

Weight Watchers, low-carb, vegan, low-fat, Atkins, low-sugar, South Beach and so many others that I can’t even remember.

I did Tae Bo, PX90, ran a 10K and took up yoga. Lots of things worked for a bit, but eventually I’d make excuses, go back to my old ways and the weight would come right back on.

Sounds familiar, right?

Inside, I felt fat and unattractive. I bought big, “flowy” clothes in an attempt to cover my body, and I even hated the way I looked in all of those. I avoided being in social situations.  I no longer recognized the woman I saw when I looked in the mirror.

I felt like a failure. I saw other working moms who went to the gym five nights a week and looked great. Why couldn’t I get my act together and do that?

Eventually, I decided that the problem must be that, because of all the confusing diet advice out there, I just didn’t know exactlywhat I should be eating or how much or when. I’d always been interested in learning about health, so I decided to go back to school part-time to become a Nutritionist. Surely then I would know exactly what I should eat and be able to easily lose the weight and keep it off, right?

Well, I DID go back to school, and I DID become a Registered Holistic Nutritionist. But nothing changed.

I did now know exactly what I should be eating, how much, and when, but I still found myself at the end of every day, on the couch, in front of the TV once everyone else was in bed, stuffing my face with potato chips or M & Ms (or more often both).

To be totally honest, it was embarrassing. It was humiliating. And it was the most hopeless I’d ever felt. I was a Nutritionist for goodness sake! And I still couldn’t get control over what I was putting in my mouth.

What the heck was wrong with me??? Why was I such a failure??

Then, I came across a book in a strange little second-hand bookstore that put me on a course that eventually changed my life and finally helped me lose that 20 pounds and keep it off for good.

It wasn’t a diet book. It didn’t even have anything to do with health. It was a book about something called “neuro-linguistic programming.”

for your brain...

I know, big words. Basically, it was a book about speaking the language of your brain. It was like an operating manual for your brain.

And that’s when a light bulb went on for me. Reading that book suddenly made it so clear to me that the secret to staying on track with healthy eating really had very little to do with the food itself (I knew what I should be eating and not eating, I just wasn’t doing it).

Rather, it had everything to do with the old patterns and habits that were wired in my brain around food. That’s what was making it feel so hard to stay on track.

I immediately became obsessed with learning everything I could, not only about neuro-linguistic programming, but about other tools as well like visualization, mindfulness and meditation and how I could use them to, not only transform my own relationship with food, but also help the clients I’d now taken on as a Nutritionist do the same thing!

from the inside out

As soon as I started seeing the power of focusing – not on the food, but on my brain – on my thoughts, feelings and habits – everything changed.

I stopped beating myself up when I made a choice I wasn’t thrilled with and I started getting super curious about what was really going on with me.

As I got better and better at using these tools, I was able to break my old, stubborn habits and replace them with new, healthier habits in a way that felt natural and automatic.

I no longer felt like I was fighting my own brain. I felt like every part of my brain was on the same page. No more tug-of-war. Making the healthy choices eventually just became a non-issue for me. My new default. My new normal.

Do I still love chocolate? Absolutely! But now I can indulge in it in a mindful and meaningful way and not use it simply because I’m tired or stressed or bored.

It’s the most free I’ve ever felt in my life!
